This innovative project
demonstrates a new modular building technique which can be mastered, without
extensive equipement requirment, by members of the Nekaneet band.
This housing system, developed by LIVING DESIGN SYSTEMS (LDS),
demonstrates an affordable construction method which allows for easy assembly.
It is designed for low cost utilities, reliability and low maintenance. It is
refered to as the APEX ADVANCED BUILDING SYSTEM.
This innovative approach to sustainable housing uses an octagonal layout.
This allows for a space efficient open floor plan which also combines well with
a common conical granary roof system. This roof system is wood truss-free,
economical, quick to assemble and is enginereed to meet local snow load
requirements.
These two houses are built on a slab-on-grade, avoiding costly basements.
The roof is supported by an original post and beam system. Wall infill consists
of bales on edge covered inside and outside with a cement stucco. This results
in a super insulated wall which has excellent fire resistance.
The designs feature large windows on the south side for significant
passive solar heat gain. They also feature ventilation systems for improved
indoor air quality.
An important part of this project was the training provided to the
participating Nekaneet apprentice carpenters. Nekaneet input played a key part
in the construction of both houses.
In September of 2001 the non profit group the Green Foundation began to
assist in the completion of the APEX 33 on reserve throuh educational workshops
provided to interested individuals in the area. This 2 story APEX will be used
as a demonstration project in the near future.
